A compact but punchy beachbreak on the remote Mendocino coast, Blues Beach (locally named) sits off Highway 1 near milepost 75.40 and is the main surfing hub for the northern Mendocino coast. W, WNW, and SW swells are your target, with E, NE, or SE winds keeping it clean. Works best at medium tide from shoulder-high to overhead, where peaky tubes are the norm. A manageable size range makes it accessible to a wide spread of abilities, though a solid four-footer here carries genuine punch, so respect the energy. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: June to October. Consistency: moderate, dependent on clean low-wind windows. Be aware that Great Whites patrol this stretch of coast year-round, which is the primary hazard and not something to take casually.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the primary surf spot for the northern Mendocino coast, so it draws the local crew regularly, but the vibe stays mellow and welcoming. Crowd levels are generally light, with a mellow scattering of surfers even on good days. Standard lineup etiquette goes a long way here.

Access & Facilities

Drive Highway 1 to milepost 75.40 and take the short dirt spur heading west down to the beach. Most of this coastline is privately owned with cliffs and marine terraces, making Blues Beach one of the few accessible entry points. Facilities are minimal, so bring water, food, and a suitable wetsuit. Cold NorCal water requires at least a 4/3 setup year-round.

Nearby Alternatives

Several other beachbreaks are scattered along this coast but are only surfable when very small and clean. Seaside Creek to the south is worth a check if Blues is blown out or maxing, though most alternatives are fickle and require similarly specific conditions.
