Quality cobblestone righthanders peel through a quasi-cove formed by San Mateo Creek sediment at Upper Trestles, a point-style break inside San Onofre State Park, roughly a quarter-mile north of the more famous Lowers. It draws in slightly more W and WNW energy than its sister break, works on S, SW, W, and WNW swells from shoulder-high to double-overhead, and favors a medium-low to medium-high tide with E or NE offshores. A short, punchy left fires into the rivermouth when the creek is flowing, but the rights are the main event, with good waves running upwards of 150 yards through the cove. Multiple peaks spread the crowd across more real estate than Lowers, though the lineup is still heavily competitive and the shoulder burn from paddling back after long rides is real. Bottom: sand and cobblestone rivermouth rock. Season: best March through October, but works year-round. Consistency: reliable across swell windows. Dawn patrol on a mid-week winter swell is your best shot at catching this place without the zoo.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup earns a heavy crowd and intimidating local vibe rating from forecast services. Multiple peaks do distribute surfers better than Lowers, but competition for set waves is relentless and the shoulder burn from paddling back is genuine. Mid-week sessions and early mornings thin the crowd meaningfully. Respect the pecking order and surf your own game.

Access & Facilities

Exit Cristianitos off the I-5 and reach the beach through San Onofre State Park, or park near the exit and walk, bike, or skate the trail down. The walk is shorter than the hike to Lowers, which matters after a long session. Watch your car and beach gear: theft in the parking area and on the beach is a documented hazard. Water quality is generally fair but degrades significantly after heavy rain events when the creek runs high.

Nearby Alternatives

When Uppers is maxed out or the zoo is unbearable, Lowers is a short walk south and can handle more size, though the crowd is equally heavy. Churches, just up the coast, offers a nearly comparable wave with a more relaxed lineup and is worth checking when Trestles is firing but unmanageable.
