A rocky beachbreak tucked inside the small fishing town of Trinidad, about 11 miles north of Arcata on California's Humboldt coast, Trinidad State Beach is a below-average but occasionally fun peak that punches above its weight on the right swell. It wants peaky NW or W groundswell from 3-6ft with an easterly offshore, and it works best at low tide when the sand has something to push against. Most days it is sloppy or closed out, so realistic expectations are required before making the drive. Consistency is medium at best, and the wave quality swings wildly between forgettable slop and legitimate short rides. Bottom: rocky beachbreak. Season: fall and winter. Consistency: medium. Bring a vehicle security plan, car break-ins at the lot have been a persistent, well-documented problem.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are light to moderate on weekdays, busier on weekends, though rarely packed. The surrounding area has a rural, tight-knit community. The car break-in problem has created tension in the lot, so be discreet with valuables and do not leave anything visible.

Access & Facilities

Exit the Trinidad offramp, roughly 11 miles north of Arcata on US-101. Pass through Trinidad town center down to the free public parking area. Restrooms are on-site. The walk to the water is short. The north Humboldt coast is cold year-round, a 4/3 wetsuit with booties is standard kit.

Nearby Alternatives

College Cove, just around the headland, offers shelter from NW wind and is worth checking when Trinidad is wind-blown, though it tends toward dumpy closeouts and only really comes alive on bigger swells. Camel Rock, a short drive south, gives another beachbreak option with a different swell exposure.
