A right-hand point and reef break three miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1, Three Mile delivers long-period SW to NW swell into a rocky shelf that produces fun, if temperamental, rides. It works shoulder-high to a few feet overhead at mid tide, with N or NE offshores cleaning up the face. The reef is uneven, producing odd boils and gurgles that keep the wave unpredictable, so intermediates and above will get the most out of it. Crowds are moderate on weekends but the vibe stays non-competitive. Bottom: rocky shelf. Season: year-round, best fall through spring for swell consistency. Tip: when Four Mile is jammed, Three Mile is a genuine pressure valve, but scope the entry and exit before paddling out on anything overhead.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday lineups are nearly empty. Weekends bring a moderate crowd, mostly familiar faces. Locals will get their waves but the vibe is not aggro. Non-competitive atmosphere rewards patience. Dawn patrol midweek avoids the squeeze entirely.

Access & Facilities

Park on Hwy 1 three miles north of Santa Cruz and take the trail down the cliff to a very small beach. The scramble is manageable in small surf but becomes genuinely sketchy when swell is up. Water is clean and cold year-round. No facilities on-site. Stock up in Santa Cruz before heading out.

Nearby Alternatives

Four Mile is the better-known break just down the road and handles similar swell windows with a more consistent shape, though it draws bigger crowds. When Three Mile is blown out or the tide is wrong, Four Mile is the obvious call.
