Tamarack sits at the foot of Tamarack Avenue in Carlsbad, California, where a small river outlet and twin jetties shape a handful of shifting sand-and-rock peaks. Optimal conditions call for WNW, W, SW, or SSW swell in the waist-high to just-overhead range, with E or NE offshores and a low-to-medium tide. On bigger days a right-hander wraps off the south jetty, taking off between the two jetties and rolling into the beach on the south side. The wide ability spread runs beginner to advanced, but the lineup is consistently busy, with longboarders and SUPs dominating the main peak on smaller days. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: year-round. Consistency: moderate, tide and swell sensitive. Water quality drops after rain, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a busy lineup most days, weekdays included. Longboarders and SUPs hold priority on the main peak, and the vibe can carry low-level territorial energy when cameras show up. Localism is otherwise mild. Dawn patrol midweek will find the least competition for peaks.

Access & Facilities

Drive Tamarack Avenue straight to the beach parking lot. Restrooms are on site. Keep valuables out of sight as car break-ins have been reported in the lot. Water quality is fair but degrades noticeably after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tamarack is too crowded or too small, Oceanside Harbor to the south offers more defined jetty peaks on the same swell. Terramar, just south, can deliver cleaner conditions on a W or NW swell when the sandbars align.
