A rare right-hand point in San Diego, Swami's sits below the gold domes of the Self-Realization Fellowship in Encinitas and serves as the daily hub of North County surfing from November through March. West and NW swells wrap into the reef, producing long rights that start mellow off the peak then race across a shallow inside ledge before funneling into a wide channel. Works from waist-high to double-overhead-plus, and the wave genuinely improves as size builds. Low to mid tide produces the fastest, most critical sections, higher tide softens things up. Calm or light E winds are ideal. Bottom: right-reef point. Season: Nov-Mar. Consistency: reliable through winter. Crowds are the defining variable here: weekday lineups are heavy, weekends approach unbearable, and an established local crew controls the outside peak with practiced authority.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The outside peak belongs to the established crew. On crowded days, skilled visitors end up picking through leftovers on the inside, where the waves are often steeper and more forgiving. No-look drop-ins are the primary hazard. Localism is described as "doable" rather than hostile, but respect the pecking order, wait your turn, and do not snake. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your clearest window.

Access & Facilities

Park in the small lot directly above the break or along Coast Highway 101. A staircase descends the bluff to the beach. The channel south of the main peak offers the cleanest paddle-out. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after rain events. No rentals on-site. Encinitas town center is minutes away for food and supplies.

Nearby Alternatives

D Street and Moonlight Beach in Encinitas offer beach-break peaks when Swami's is overcrowded or the swell angle is off. Cardiff Reef, a few minutes south, picks up similar W and NW swell on a sandier bottom and can be less competitive on mid-sized swells.
