Surfside sits just south of Seal Beach inside a gated community, and its wave mechanics are shaped entirely by the Huntington Harbor jetty. South swells refract off the jetty wall and produce A-frame wedges at two distinct peaks locals call The Bowl and The Hole. SSE, S, and WSW swells generate the most consistent energy in summer, while solid W and NW swells fire the spot from November through February. Best conditions arrive at mid-to-high tide before the NW onshore winds clock in around 10am, making dawn patrol mandatory in summer. The sandbars shift after each hurricane season, so quality varies year to year. Bottom: sand. Season: Nov-Feb primary, S swells Jun-Sep secondary. Consistency: moderate. Get here early or expect choppy, blown-out peaks by mid-morning. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward, though the mellow locals make it approachable for capable beginners on smaller days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The gated community creates a natural filter. Peaks off the jetty draw a dedicated local crew and can be competitive when the spot is firing. Weekdays are manageable, weekends fill up. Localism is present but not aggressive by California standards. Be respectful in the lineup and you'll be fine. Don't snake sets at the peak.

Access & Facilities

Park on Anderson St. And walk up the beach, or arrange access through a resident. Do not park on the wrong side of the road or you will be towed. Running through the guard gate is a known hazard. Water quality is fair, worse after rain. Watch for tar on the bottom of your board.

Nearby Alternatives

When Surfside is blown out or flat, Seal Beach to the north offers a more exposed beachbreak that picks up the same swells. Huntington Beach Pier is a short drive south and handles similar conditions with more consistent sandbar options.
