A compact beach break tucked along the California coast, Sunny Cove delivers short, punchy peaks that fire best off a rock formation near the cliff line. NW and SW swells light it up in the 3-6ft range, with W winds degrading the surface quickly so early mornings are worth the alarm. The wave suits intermediates and up, though beginners occasionally paddle out on smaller days. Crowd levels swing wildly: some sessions are solo, others packed. Bottom: mixed sand and rock with submerged hazards. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: low to moderate. Critical warning: a large cliff section collapsed in 2007 and the debris is still submerged, surfacing at low tide near the point and toward the cliff side of the beach. Check the waterline carefully before paddling out, especially if bodyboarding close to shore. Access is via the Sunny Cove street turnoff, with cliff stairs leading down to the sand.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd patterns here are genuinely unpredictable. You can arrive on a clean 4ft morning to an empty lineup or find it stacked with locals on a flat midweek day. Regulars know the takeoff zone by the rock, and there is only one functional peak. Respect priority, keep sessions quiet, and the vibe stays easy.

Access & Facilities

Park on Sunny Cove street or surrounding side streets. Carved cliff stairs lead down to the beach. No permanent facilities noted at the break. Submerged rock hazards from the 2007 cliff collapse are the dominant safety concern: visible at low tide but invisible when water rises. Bodyboarders in particular should scout the lineup from the cliff before entering.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sunny Cove is flat or blown out, other California coastal beach breaks in the region can pick up the same NW swell with less bottom hazard. Check neighboring exposed points for cleaner conditions when size builds.
