Northern Pacifica's beachbreak stretches along a largely overlooked section of San Mateo County coast, sitting between Highway 1 and a concrete pier that anchors the south end of the beach. NW, W, and N swells fill in the shifting sandbars from waist-high to well overhead, with E winds cleaning up the face. Best from September through April, the wave rewards intermediate to advanced surfers willing to read unpredictable conditions on a usually empty lineup. Bottom: sand with some reef. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: fickle, check-it-when-you're-passing. Pull over from Highway 1 when it looks like something is happening on the hill approach heading south, because the wave is almost always bigger and more powerful than it appears from the pedestrian walkway above. Metal debris in the sand near the drainage pipes is a real hazard, and the shorebreak on big winter days is genuinely punishing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is almost always empty mid-week and only occasionally picks up on weekends when a quality sandbar is obvious. The local vibe is welcoming, though on the rare day when all 10 regulars have found the same bar, show the usual respect. Fishermen on the pier can be territorial if you're surfing close to the structure.

Access & Facilities

Multiple exits off Highway 1 lead directly to beachside parking. Easy walk to the water across a wide beach. The pier has a cafe for post-session food in summer. Water quality is mostly clean. Watch for metal debris in the sand near drainage pipes and maintain awareness of shark activity in this stretch of the Red Triangle, especially when surfing alone.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sharp Park is not cooperating, the rest of Pacifica Beach to the north offers similar beachbreak setups worth checking on the same swell. Linda Mar to the south handles smaller, more forgiving conditions and suits a wider range of abilities on days when Sharp Park is closing out.
