Seaside Reef is a punchy, predominantly left-hand reef break sitting on the Cardiff stretch of the San Diego coast, easy to spot from the 101. It needs W or NW swell at 15 seconds or under, works best at low tide, and handles shoulder-high to a few feet overhead before things get properly hollow and fast. The left can suck out hard on takeoff, flatten briefly, then reform into a zippy inside section that rewards experienced shortboarders. On extreme low tide with a solid groundswell, the left produces legitimate tube sections off the drop. Intermediate to advanced surfers only: the reef is shallow and unforgiving, and the takeoff zone is tight enough that the lineup maxes out around 20 surfers before it becomes a scrimmage. Bottom: reef. Season: November through March. Consistency: reliable in winter with NW pulses, less predictable in summer. Dawn patrol on low tide is your best move before the crowd builds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The takeoff zone is small, which concentrates pressure fast. Weekends get ultra-crowded. Bodyboarders often outnumber stand-up surfers, and there are a handful of locals who set the tone. Respect the lineup, don't snake sets, and you'll be fine. Aggressive vibes are possible at the shorebreak on busy days. Go early on weekdays to find breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Large parking lot directly off the 101 south of the Cardiff restaurants, with bathrooms and a lifeguard tower. No hike required. Watch for rocks exposed at low tide near the shoreline. Minor runoff possible from San Elijo Lagoon after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Tabletops, just to the south, offers another reef option when Seaside gets too packed. George's, nearby, breaks over sand and handles crowds better on smaller days.
