The beachbreak at the mouth of Santa Rosa Creek is the main surf in Cambria, a bowly, peaky stretch running roughly half a mile along Moonstone Beach Drive backed by pebbly sand and scattered boulders. NW, W, and SW swells all find the break, with offshore E and NE winds cleaning it up nicely. Low-to-mid tide tends to produce the best shape, and the ideal size window sits waist-high to overhead. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find most of the value here, though the crowd is moderate and the vibe relatively polite for Central California. Bottom: sand with rock. Season: September through January. Consistency: moderate. Watch the shallow shorebreak on the inside and stay aware that this stretch of coast carries real shark activity, so early-morning sessions carry added risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup sits at moderate density and the local vibe is doable, though it can get a touch competitive when the waves are good. This is the only real break in Cambria, so everyone funnels here. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions cut the crowd significantly. Shoulder burn is minimal.

Access & Facilities

Exit Highway 1 onto Moonstone Beach Drive from either direction and park in the signed asphalt lot at the southern end of the road. Access is straightforward. Cambria town is close by for food and water. The water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

If Santa Rosa Creek is closing out or too crowded, head south toward Morro Bay for more sheltered beach options or check the points around Cayucos that can clean up SW swell with more length. San Simeon to the north can hold smaller NW swell if the crowds push you out.
