A wide, crescent-shaped beachbreak on the Big Sur coast that produces both lefts and rights across several distinct peaks, roughly 5 miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1. NW, W, and SW swells all light it up, with E and NE winds going offshore. The south peak runs long and mushy, peeling into a deep channel with a convenient rip current for the paddle-out. Rights at the south end are faster, shallower, and more walled, while the north peak tends to run bigger but loses shape. Medium to high tide is the sweet spot. Intermediate surfers will get the most out of it, though the mellow crowd and multiple peaks make it accessible to confident beginners. Bottom: sand. Season: September to January. Consistency: very high, around 150 surfable days per year. When swell pushes past overhead, getting through the inside becomes a grinding war of duck dives, so pick your days carefully.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is genuinely welcoming. Crowd pressure is mellow for a California beach this consistent. Multiple peaks spread surfers across the cove, so you can usually find your own section. Weekends see more foot traffic from campers and day-trippers but rarely hit critical mass.

Access & Facilities

Drive north on Highway 1 out of San Simeon and follow the marked signs to the paved car park. A long staircase drops to the beach, so pack light. Camping is available nearby. Water and facilities are basic. Bring your own food and water for a full day.

Nearby Alternatives

If Sand Dollar is blown out or too big to paddle, the Big Sur Rivermouth a short drive north offers fast, thin rights that blow offshore in the prevailing NW wind. In smaller, cleaner conditions, the beachbreak peaks around the Salinas River area to the south can also fire on peaky W swells.
