San Onofre State Beach is the mellow heartbeat of California surf culture, a cobblestone and sand setup south of San Clemente where slow, forgiving peaks have been rolling through since the earliest days of West Coast surfing. Three main breaks share the stretch: the Point up north catches SW swells best and throws up longer rights with occasional fast lefts on head-high days. Old Man's, about a 15-minute paddle south, rolls off a padded reef 200-400 yards out and is legitimately one of the mushiest, most forgiving waves in Southern California. Dogpatch sits furthest south and works as a fallback when beginners cannot make the paddle to Old Man's. All breaks favor S to SW swell, E to NE offshores, and function across all tides, though medium tide tends to clean things up. Summer and fall are peak season. Arrive early on weekends or face a parking queue longer than the sets. Bottom: cobblestone reef and sand. Season: May to October. Consistency: high.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer weekends are genuinely packed. Ten people on a single wave is not unusual at Old Man's, and that is not a warning, it is part of the culture here. The vibe is welcoming rather than territorial, but wave-hog etiquette still applies. Dawn patrol timing matters less for uncrowded lineups than for securing parking before the gate hits capacity.

Access & Facilities

Exit I-5 at Basilone Road and drive roughly three miles south on old Hwy 101 past the ranger station. Day-use parking fee applies. In summer and on weekends, lines form at the gate from first light and the lot can fill to capacity. A yearly pass covering both San Onofre and Trails is worth it for regulars. Water quality is generally clean, though San Onofre Creek can push runoff after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When San O' is flat or maxed out, Trestles sits just north and offers performance waves from Lowers through Uppers across a variety of skill levels. Church at San Mateo Point, a few miles further south, delivers excellent left-hand walls on solid S and SW swells for more experienced surfers.
