A pier-influenced sandbar just north of San Clemente Pier produces reliable beach peaks along the mid-Southern California coast, roughly an hour south of Los Angeles. The pier pilings deflect currents and lock in a sandbar that turns south and combo swells into punchy right-handers, occasionally barreling at mid-tide in the shoulder-high to overhead range. Offshore east winds groom the faces, straight south swells work fine but combo swells tend to add shape and variety. The wave suits all ability levels, though the pier itself is a real hazard on bigger days when sets can close out fast and push you toward the structure. Bottom: sand. Season: July through February. Consistency: moderate to good when south and northwest swells overlap. Summer blackball restrictions (Memorial Day to Labor Day) limit surfing to the north side only, so show up before the flags go up or plan around the lifeguard schedule.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a crowd most mornings, particularly weekends and early summer. The local high school surf team runs dawn patrol sessions that can pack the peak. Groms are assertive and know the sandbar well. Respect the rotation, don't snake, and you'll be fine. Localism is present but manageable for surfers who paddle with awareness.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking lots sit right at the beach and are free before 10am and after 5pm. Street parking in the surrounding neighborhood exists but fills fast on summer weekends. Restrooms, showers, and food options line the pier area. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain. Watch the pier pilings as the primary physical hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When this spot closes out on bigger swells, T-Street just south of the pier can offer more organized point-influenced peaks. Trestles, a few miles north, handles larger swell with far more shape but draws a much heavier competitive crowd.
