Salt Creek delivers a rare mix of wave types within a single cove at the north end of Dana Point: a rippable left-point section, punchy mid-beach peaks, and a grinding shorebreak barrel up by the golf course. S, SW, W, and WNW combo swells all fire here, with E to SE winds keeping faces clean. Mid to medium-high tide is the sweet spot, low tide exposes rocks on the inside at the Point and turns Gravels into a two-foot slab. The crowd is a real factor. Weekends push the lineup into ultra-crowded territory, with cliquey locals and a contingent of grumpy regulars who've claimed their patches since the 1970s. Bottom: rock, gravel, and sand mixed. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. Arrive at dawn on a weekday to get waves without the circus.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Salt Creek is one of the most consistently crowded stretches in South OC. The Point draws professionals, groms, longboarders, and bodyboarders into the same pinched takeoff zone. Localism is real but navigable: paddle out with patience, don't snake, and acknowledge the hierarchy. After 10 a.m. In summer, the Point is the only zone open to surfers once Middles goes blackball.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking sits at the top of the trail off Ritz Carlton Drive, free options exist across PCH near the library. Lifeguards are on duty seasonally. Watch the Creek outflow after rain for water quality issues. Rocks on the inside at low tide are a genuine hazard at the Point.

Nearby Alternatives

San Clemente's T-Street is a few miles south and handles similar S swell with a slightly mellower crowd. Trestles is further south and far superior in quality when it's on, but draws its own crowd pressure.
