A rocky cove just south of Sharp Park, Rockaway punches above its setting with a standout right that breaks at the south end of the beach into a deep channel along the point. That channel is your friend on bigger days, making paddle-outs manageable even when NW and W swells are stacking overhead. SW swells also push a left into the south end. Best at low to incoming mid tide, in SE or E winds, from waist-high up to double overhead. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of this place. Crowds are real and the vibe is territorial when it's firing, so read the lineup before paddling out. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: October to March. Consistency: medium. Water quality can drop after rain due to runoff, so check conditions before going out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rockaway is crowded whenever it's working, and the local crew is protective. The vibe has been described as intimidating, so arrive with patience and respect. Don't snake sets, don't paddle to the peak on your first wave, and let the regulars set the tone. Dawn patrol reduces friction.

Access & Facilities

Easy freeway access via Rockaway Ave with free parking at the end. Lifeguards present in season. Watch for heavy rip currents running along the point, shorebreak onto rocks on bigger swells, and the paddle back in, which can be harder than the paddle out against an active rip.

Nearby Alternatives

Sharp Park sits just north and offers a different angle on the same swell. Linda Mar to the south is a more forgiving beachbreak better suited to beginners and smaller days.
