Called the "Queen of the Coast" for good reason, Rincon is a cobblestone and sand point break on the Ventura-Santa Barbara county line that produces some of the longest, most perfectly walled right-hand rides in California. W, WSW, and WNW swells below 15 seconds are the key: longer-period WNW energy gets blocked by Pt. Conception, so watch the period before you drive. N and NE offshores groom the face and push it from head-high to double-overhead. Three linkable sections, Indicator at the tip, the Rivermouth in the middle, and the Cove nearest the highway, can string together 300-plus yards of wall on a solid set, a genuine endurance test. This is an intermediate-to-advanced wave on a good day, the volume and etiquette demands of a 150-person lineup make it a rough classroom for anyone still figuring out right-of-way. Bottom: cobblestone and sand. Season: October through February. Consistency: reliable when swell and period align. Go at dawn or on a weekday to find any breathing room.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect 150-plus surfers on any quality swell, especially weekends. Drop-ins are the main hazard, not from aggression but from sheer density. The local community trends welcoming when you surf clean and share waves. Learn right-of-way before paddling out: a 300-yard wave with that many people on it punishes careless takeoffs quickly. Weekday dawns in November and December are as good as it gets.

Access & Facilities

Exit Highway 101 at Rincon and use the free north or south parking lots. A walkdown path deposits you at the lower Cove section. Parking-lot break-ins are a documented problem, leave nothing visible in the car. Water quality is fair most days but can deteriorate significantly when Rincon Creek runs after heavy rain, check before paddling if there has been recent rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

If Rincon is maxed out or the period is too long, Ventura point and the beachbreaks around Emma Wood can pick up the same swell with smaller crowds. Heading north toward Carpinteria, the reefs there occasionally fire on WSW swells when the period is shorter.
