A rivermouth sandbar setup at the mouth of the San Gabriel River in Seal Beach, Ray Bay delivers surprisingly long rides for a Southern California beach break. SW to NW swells wrap into the breakwaters and hit shifting sandbars that can produce walls stretching 150 yards or more on a good bank day. Best from low to mid incoming tide with a light offshore, which typically means early mornings. The three main peaks between the breakwaters each have a distinct personality: the south wall runs a long right, the center throws up a peaky A-frame with a right wall that occasionally links all the way through, and the north wall offers a punchier right and a short hollow left. Skill range runs wide here, from learners on small days to experienced surfers threading fast overhead tubes when El Nino-driven south swells fire. Bottom: sand/rivermouth. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: moderate. One real hazard to know before paddling out: a high concentration of stingrays near the rivermouth outflow means the stingray shuffle is non-negotiable every single session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays tend to be quiet with a manageable local crew. Weekends bring a full-spectrum crowd including beginners and occasional overflow from Huntington Beach when that stretch closes out. The local name debate is real and pointed. Respect the lineup order, especially near the walls where rides are long and priority matters.

Access & Facilities

Large parking lot adjacent to the breakwater at Seal Beach. Street parking available as backup. The stingray shuffle is essential every time you enter and exit the water. Water quality varies with river outflow conditions, particularly after rain. No surf rentals on site, the nearest shops are in Seal Beach town center.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ray Bay is flat or blown out, the beach peaks at Huntington Beach stretch north for miles and pick up swell from a wider window. Bolsa Chica State Beach sits just north and offers similar sandbar setups with more space to spread out on busy days.
