A reef break tucked below the Palos Verdes cliffs, Rat Beach delivers fast, punchy peaks on NW swell at low to mid tide, with neighboring Haggerties visible to the south from the same access path. NW swell in the 2-5ft range is the sweet spot, and an offshore east or NE wind cleans it up noticeably. Rides are short by design, typically 50m or less before sections wall and close out, but on a better day faces open to 100m of workable wall. The wave suits all skill levels in smaller surf, though its reef bottom and faster sections reward surfers who can handle a punchy, shallow takeoff. Crowds are the main complication: weekdays see a manageable few in the water, but weekends draw heavy traffic. Bottom: reef. Season: fall and winter, when NW groundswell arrives with consistency. Consistency: moderate. Bring a longboard for sub-3ft days when the wave softens and loses drive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds can be intense. Community reports split on localism: some long-term surfers say the vibe has mellowed over decades, others note heavier local presence during solid winter swells. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the practical answer. Respect the lineup order and you're unlikely to have issues.

Access & Facilities

Park near the Palos Verdes Beach Club and follow the path down the cliff to the beach. The walk is short but the trail is steep in places. Haggerties is visible to the south once you're at the bottom. No major facilities at the break itself. The reef bottom means booties are worth considering, especially at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

Haggerties, just south along the same stretch, is worth checking on the same paddle or walk. When Rat is maxed or too crowded, Burnouts and the Avenues further up the coast see their own crowd but offer different exposures depending on the swell window.
