A protected cluster of rock-and-sand peaks tucked between Pleasure Point and Capitola, Privates delivers mostly right-handers in a surprisingly sheltered stretch of the Santa Cruz coast. It needs a solid swell to really come alive, either a big N or S pulse, but with the right board it stays fun and rideable well below overhead. Mid-low tide is the sweet spot, wind from the north cleans things up and helps the rights wall properly. The spread-out lineup suits intermediates and progressing beginners alike, and shoulder burn stays light because there is enough space to chase peaks without constant jostling. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: works year-round on big swells. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Water quality is generally clean, but avoid paddling out for a day or two after heavy rain when runoff degrades conditions along this stretch of Monterey Bay.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is genuinely mellow. Multiple peaks spread across a broad playing field mean the lineup rarely stacks up, even when conditions are good. Locals are welcoming by Santa Cruz standards. Basic etiquette, call your wave, paddle wide, keep it civil, is all that is expected.

Access & Facilities

Park in the residential neighborhood and walk through the gate to reach the beach. No large car park, so arrive modestly and respect the neighbors. Bring your own water and snacks, facilities are minimal at the break itself. Watch for rocks on the inside, especially at lower tides. Water is clean under normal conditions.

Nearby Alternatives

When Privates is too small, Pleasure Point a short distance up the coast offers more reliable and powerful right-hand walls across multiple breaks. Capitola beach to the south is an option in smaller, mellow conditions or when learning.
