A fast, fun right-hand point peeling along a rocky stretch of Malibu coastline, Point Dume demands a 20-minute beach walk and a willingness to navigate one of LA's most tight-knit lineups. It works best on S, SW, or W swells from chest-high to double overhead, with NE offshores cleaning it up and all tides technically rideable, though mid-to-high tide smooths out the boulders on the inside. The wave is fickle by Southern California standards and can stay flat for weeks, but when a proper groundswell arrives it produces fast, powerful, ledgey walls with legitimate length. Experienced surfers only. The crowd is heavy and the local vibe is genuinely intimidating: this breaks in front of private property, access is contested, and the crew that surfs here regularly does not welcome drop-ins or attitude. Bottom: rock with sand. Season: summer and autumn. Consistency: fickle, swell-dependent. Bring a shortboard or fish, paddle hard when you earn your set, and give up a few waves when you're new to the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Heavy crowd, serious localism. This is not the place to test your priority rules. The crew here is tight-knit, protective of the wave, and the private-property situation gives locals a psychological ownership that they enforce. If the lineup is packed, leave. Come on small weekday swells or very early. Respect in the water means sitting wide, waiting your turn, and not burning anyone, ever.

Access & Facilities

Park at Point Dume State Beach near Westward Beach. The walk to the point takes roughly 20 minutes along the beach heading south. Car towing in the surrounding neighborhood is common. There are no facilities at the break itself. Rocks and urchins make entries and exits technical, especially at lower tide. Water quality is clean for the LA area.

Nearby Alternatives

When Point Dume is flat or too hostile, Zuma Beach and County Line offer more accessible beach-break options nearby. Further north, Rincon fires on the same NW-W swells and has a more established (if still competitive) visitor protocol.
