A-frame · ReefAdvanced6–12 ftSep – Nov

A steep, bowly right-point reef on the Mendocino Coast, Point Arena delivers powerful, fast walls off the north side of the pier when W or NW swell fills in above six feet. The right needs size to wake up, ideally head-high to double overhead, and works best on NE to E winds with medium tide holding the shape together. A left on the south side of the pier catches S swell and NW groundswells too, though it sits more exposed to the prevailing northwesterly wind. Both waves break over sharp rock shelves, and the inside section on the right is genuinely nasty dry reef. This is advanced-surfer territory only. The crowd is heavy for a remote spot, locals are openly hostile to unfamiliar faces, and great white sharks are a documented, ongoing presence in these waters. Bottom: Rock. Season: Sept-Nov. Consistency: Needs real swell, fickle in summer. Pack a gun or step-up for anything solid, and if it's flat, there's a burger bar up at the pier.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is serious. The lineup gets packed with surly regulars who are openly hostile to out-of-towners, especially anyone from south of the Bay. Do not lie about where you're from. Surf with respect, wait your turn, and keep a low profile. Dawn patrol will ease the crowd pressure. This is not a spot to bring a crew or make noise.

Access & Facilities

Point Arena is a 3.5-hour drive north of San Francisco on Highway 1. From Hwy 1, head west on Port Road to the pier and find parking near the water. Great white sharks frequent this stretch of coast with regularity. Water is cold year-round, a 4/3 minimum is needed, with 5/4 and booties in winter.

Nearby Alternatives

If Point Arena is too heavy, crowded, or sharky, the Mendocino Coast has a scatter of beachbreaks and reefbreaks farther north worth exploring in smaller, cleaner conditions. Fort Bragg-area peaks offer more forgiving access and less localism pressure.
