Pipes is the most dependable section of reef along the San Elijo campground stretch, sitting between Cardiff Reef and Swami's on San Diego's North County coast. A consistent lefthander peeling over erratic reef, it works best on NW or W swell under 15 seconds at low tide, waist to head high, with glassy conditions or a light E wind keeping the face clean. Most of the San Elijo reef is too fickle or protected to bother with, but Pipes earns regular attention for its rippable wall and predictable shape during the winter window. Recreational surfers and longboarders find it approachable, though the reef underneath demands respect. Bottom: reef. Season: November through March. Consistency: moderate to good in winter. Bring a board with volume for the smaller days, and avoid the session after rain when water quality drops.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw a moderate crowd and the lineup can pack out, particularly when the rest of the county goes flat and Pipes is the one consistent option running. Weekdays are noticeably quieter. The local vibe is welcoming, but standard lineup etiquette applies. Going left is the move, and everyone knows it.

Access & Facilities

Park along PCH at the north end of San Elijo State Beach campgrounds and walk west. The campground has restrooms and some amenities for campers. Water quality is rated fair and degrades noticeably after significant rainfall, so check conditions post-storm before paddling out. Watch the rocks on the reef, especially at low tide when entries and exits get sharper.

Nearby Alternatives

Cardiff Reef sits just to the south and picks up similar swell with a different reef configuration worth checking on the same run. Swami's, a few hundred meters north, offers a longer right-hand point option when the swell has enough size and direction to wrap in properly.
