Pigeon Point earns its reputation as a backup option rather than a destination, sitting on the San Mateo County coast south of Half Moon Bay where offshore winds persist when spots to the north are blown out. A reported right breaks on the outside on big S and SW swells, conditions that are genuinely rare along this stretch of coast. On Maverick's-scale days, a larger right reportedly emerges further outside the point. Smaller reef sections line the cliffs on the south side, offering something rideable when swell cooperates. The setup works best on incoming, low-to-mid tide with N or NE winds keeping the face clean. Sizes from waist-high to overhead are workable. Bottom: sand with rock. Season: June through November. Consistency: low. Come prepared for solitude and cold NorCal water. The hazards here are not crowds or locals but rather the fundamental isolation of this stretch of coast and the well-documented white shark activity in the greater Red Triangle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals exist but are almost never in the water here, which tells you something honest about the wave's appeal. The lineup is mellow when occupied, with no reported localism pressure. Welcoming in theory, mostly irrelevant in practice.

Access & Facilities

The point is accessible directly from Highway 1. Parking is straightforward. The Pigeon Point Lighthouse hostel is nearby and offers basic facilities. Water is clean but cold year-round, typical of central California. Bring a full suit minimum.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pigeon Point is flat or uninspiring, Año Nuevo to the south sees similar swell exposure with slightly more consistent setups. Half Moon Bay's breaks to the north, including the stretch around Mavericks on big days, offer far more reliable options when wind and swell align.
