Pico Creek delivers a dependable right-hand reef at the northern edge of San Simeon, California, where a kelp-choked reef in front of the creek mouth produces a wave that peaks outside, backs off through a mid-section, then reforms into a punchy inside bowl. SW, W, and NW swells fire this spot best at chest-high to overhead, with NE or E winds keeping faces clean. Low tide favors the reef, walk south of the staircase at mid or high tide for a wide beachbreak peppered with boulders and shallow reef patches that works best under a few feet overhead and earns its keep in summer. Intermediate to advanced surfers make up the typical lineup of 10 to 15 people, and localism here runs real. Bottom: sand, rock, and reef. Season: June through February. Consistency: fairly reliable when swell tops chest-high. The elephant seal rookery close by means great white sharks are a genuine presence year-round, not a hypothetical risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Occupancy caps around 10 to 15 surfers, which keeps it manageable, but localism is a real factor. Be polite, read the lineup, wait your turn. Showing up at dawn on a weekday is the practical move to ease into the crew without drawing attention. Disrespecting the lineup or the local crew is not a good idea here.

Access & Facilities

Head north on Highway 1 into San Simeon Acres and turn west onto Pico Avenue. The cul-de-sac at the end has limited parking, a staircase drops directly to the sand. Water quality is fair but degrades noticeably after rain, so skip post-storm sessions. No facilities on the beach. Fuel and food are available in town along Highway 1. White sharks patrol this stretch actively due to the nearby elephant seal rookery at Piedras Blancas. A gun or your biggest shortboard is worth having when the swell climbs overhead.

Nearby Alternatives

San Simeon Pier sits just south and can offer shelter from north winds. Cayucos, roughly 20 km south, has a more forgiving beachbreak when Pico Creek gets too maxed or the crowd too heavy.
