A quiet stretch of coast north of Santa Cruz, Pescadero delivers beach peaks and rocky reef sections that can click into surprisingly clean shape when conditions line up. W, NW, or SW swells push energy into the exposed beach and the reefs clustering around Pescadero Point to the south, where rights and lefts peel over a mixed sand-and-rock bottom. Incoming to high tide is the sweet spot, keeping the shallower reef sections honest. E winds or glass keep the face clean. Best size runs waist-high to overhead. The crowd is essentially zero most days, which is the draw and the warning: no witnesses means no rescue if something goes wrong. Sharks patrol this stretch of coast, and the isolation is real. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: year-round. Consistency: moderate, best when a solid W or NW swell is running. Bring a leash you trust, tell someone where you're going, and treat the solitude as a reason to surf conservatively, not recklessly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the more isolated stretches on this coast. Lineup pressure is essentially nonexistent. Pick your peak, surf both ways, and enjoy the silence. The flip side: no crowd means no one is watching. Surf within your ability here more than anywhere.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available along the road. No lifeguards, no facilities to speak of. Water quality runs mostly clean. The hazards are environmental: isolation, cold water, and sharks are all real factors on this part of the Northern California coast. Plan accordingly.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pescadero is too small or messy, Año Nuevo to the south and Half Moon Bay to the north offer more consistent options with better infrastructure. Mavericks is accessible from Half Moon Bay for those chasing serious size.
