Linda Mar (Pacifica) earns its reputation as the friendliest beach break north of Santa Cruz, a wide sandy bay on the San Mateo County coast that catches W, WNW, and NW swells from waist-high to overhead. Best on incoming mid-to-high tide with S or E winds, which the valley behind the beach funnels into reliable offshores, keeping it clean when Ocean Beach is a wind-ravaged mess. The wave is mostly short, sloppy, and sectiony, but on its better days it strings together 50-150m rides across multiple peaks. Beginners through intermediates make up the majority of the lineup, with longboarders especially well represented. Bottom: sand, with some rock at the far north end. Season: September through May. Consistency: moderate, with frequent closeouts on big swells or low tide. Avoid surfing within 72 hours of heavy rain, when the creek outflow and pump house discharge make water quality genuinely sketchy.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the most crowded break north of Santa Cruz, full stop. Weekends pack the peaks with beginners, longboarders, and bodyboarders. A few locals can get territorial, which feels unearned given the wave quality, but it's mostly benign. Dawn patrol on weekdays trims the crowd significantly. The vibe is generally welcoming by NorCal standards.

Access & Facilities

Park free on Crespi Drive or Linda Mar Boulevard and walk across the street. Restrooms and showers on site. The Taco Bell midbeach is a known landmark. Seals and dolphins are regular sightings. No documented shark incidents, but the wildlife does keep you aware.

Nearby Alternatives

When Linda Mar closes out in bigger NW swell, Pedro Point to the south offers a punchier, more sheltered option for experienced surfers. Ocean Beach in SF handles larger swells with more power, though it comes with heavier wind exposure and a significantly more demanding paddle-out.
