A mile-long sand bottom beachbreak south of Ventura, Oxnard Shores is the county's most responsive south swell magnet, picking up SSE, S, and SW combo swells bigger and more hollow than anywhere else nearby. East winds clean it up best, optimal size runs shoulder-high to double overhead at low to mid tide. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward here, and the crowd stays moderate even on good days, partly because the surrounding residential development has quietly pushed casual visitors away. Bottom: sand. Season: September through February is peak, though it works year-round on the right combo. Consistency: fickle but punchy when firing. Pack a shortboard or fish, show up at dawn before any onshore breeze builds, and be ready to get worked because this wave breaks hard or not at all.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate on good days, lighter midweek. There is no heavy local scene here, and on surprising occasions an excellent day will have almost no one out. The forecast services vibe rating is doable, so respect the lineup and you will be fine. Dawn patrol is the smart play if any swell is in the water.

Access & Facilities

Exit Victoria Avenue in Ventura, head south, and turn right on 5th Street to reach the beach. Access is easy with roadside parking nearby. Water quality is generally clean but can degrade after heavy rain. No notable hazards beyond the wave itself.

Nearby Alternatives

If Oxnard closes out on a big NW swell, Silver Strand a few miles south or Ventura Point to the north are the standard bailouts. Rincon, farther up the coast toward Santa Barbara, is worth the drive when a long-period NW swell is running clean.
