Tourmaline's Old Man's is San Diego's most welcoming longboard wave, a mellow mix of sand and rock at the foot of Tourmaline Street in Pacific Beach. Works best on W, NW, or SW swell in the waist-to-head-high range, with low to mid tide and an offshore NE or E wind keeping faces clean. November through February is peak season, though the spot is rideable year-round when swell cooperates. Beginners will find forgiving reform sections, longboarders and fish riders dominate the lineup and set the relaxed tone. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: best Nov-Feb, functional year-round. Consistency: moderate. Bring a mid-length or longboard, leave the shortboard in the car unless you enjoy riding mush, and watch for errant 12-foot planks in a crowded water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The parking lot fills fast on weekends and the lineup follows suit. Despite the numbers, the vibe stays mellow. Tourmaline regulars are territorial about the culture, not the waves. Respect the unwritten longboard etiquette, give right-of-way to the surfer trimming the nose, and you'll be fine. Aggro energy belongs a quarter-mile south at Crystal Pier, not here.

Access & Facilities

Drive to the end of Tourmaline Street in Pacific Beach for ample public parking. The paddle-out is straightforward, no rocks or serious rip to navigate at typical size. Water is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain. Restrooms and street-level food options are nearby along Garnet Avenue.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tourmaline is blown out or overcrowded, Crystal Pier a few blocks south picks up similar swell with a faster, punchier takeoff. Windansea, a couple miles south, offers a more serious reef option for surfers wanting performance over social atmosphere.
