Oil Piers was one of Ventura County's most beloved summer setups, a well-defined sandbar that broke off Arco's oil piers a half-mile south of Mussel Shoals. The pier structure artificially shaped the sand into a reliable A-frame that barreled in both directions on a good W to WSW swell, 2-8ft, best at low-to-incoming tide with a clean NE offshore. It drew Ventura's core surfing crowd precisely because it was consistently glassy, well-shaped, and low-key. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round when it was operational. Consistency: moderate. Know before you paddle out: Mobil's piers were dismantled in 1998 after the state contract expired, and without the structure to anchor the sandbar, the break reverted to a shapeless stretch of exposed beach with no reliable peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

In its prime, Oil Piers drew a tight local crew from Ventura County who treated it like a private club. Moderate crowds with an average local vibe by Ventura standards. Those who surfed it still talk about it. Anyone paddling out at the current exposed beach will find a much more anonymous, inconsistent situation.

Access & Facilities

Park in the Pier parking lot off Highway 101 near Mussel Shoals. Watch for glass in the parking area. The beach itself is exposed and straightforward. No pier pilings remain as a hazard in the water, though debris can occasionally appear. Water is generally clean but can degrade after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When the current exposed beach isn't producing, Mussel Shoals itself sits just to the north and can offer some protection and shape on the right swell. Rincon is a short drive south and remains the standout point break in the county when NW swells fill in.
