Ocean Beach is San Diego's most reliable central beach break, picking up W, NW, SW, and SSW swells when the rest of the coast goes flat. Big Jetty on the north end throws a steep peak off the Mission Bay jetty that elongates into a fast right wall, while Avalanche, just north of the finger jetty, runs predominantly left and holds nearly any swell with west in it. The OB Pier section offers both peaks but runs shifty and temperamental, best when a right peels into the pilings at low to mid tide. S to SW winds go offshore, and the whole stretch works chest-high to a couple feet overhead before closeouts take over around 8ft. All skill levels can find something here, though summer packs the lineup and the local vibe turns stuffy. Bottom: sand. Season: Nov-Feb best, works year-round. Consistency: high. One hard warning: the San Diego River drains directly into this stretch, and closures for sewage and runoff are frequent. Check water quality before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends and summer bring heavy crowds, especially around the pier. The local vibe is described as stuffy but doable. Respect in the water goes a long way. Dawn patrol mid-week in winter is your best shot at quality waves with room to breathe.

Access & Facilities

Parking at the end of Voltaire Street or by the pier at Newport Street. Easy beach access with no long walks. Food and services close by in the OB neighborhood. Water quality is fair on normal days and genuinely hazardous after rain when the San Diego River is running. Check San Diego Surfrider or Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card before sessions after any storm.

Nearby Alternatives

When OB is maxed out or the river is running, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach to the north pick up similar swells with less runoff risk. Sunset Cliffs reefs to the south offer a different swell window and a different crowd entirely on solid NW swells.
