Three miles of shifty San Francisco beachbreak that earns every wave you get. Ocean Beach runs from Kelly's Cove at the north end down to Sloat Street, open to NW, WNW, and W swells, and positioned to catch virtually every pulse moving along the California coast. Outgoing tide generally cleans things up, but the volume of water flooding in and out of the Golden Gate reshuffles sandbars hour to hour, making read-and-react skills as important as any technical ability. The best peaks tend to sit in the middle of the beach and run head-high to 3x overhead. E winds go offshore. Intermediate to advanced surfers only. Bottom: sand. Season: October through January. Consistency: high when swells are running, but conditions shift fast enough to humiliate anyone. Bring a step-up on solid days and accept that the best peak will almost always be 50 yards from where you're paddling.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd levels track quality closely. On mediocre days it thins out. On a clean overhead day with decent sandbars, expect attitude from locals who have put time into reading this fickle stretch of coast. Respect the pecking order, don't paddle straight to the peak on your first session, and understand that intimidating vibe is partly earned by the sheer physical demands of surfing here regularly.

Access & Facilities

Public parking lots at the north and south ends of the beach. For the middle stretches, street parking in the avenues is the move. Water quality is clean, with the usual caveat about paddling out after heavy rain. Cold water is the constant: NorCal temps mean a 4/3 at minimum, often a 5/4 with hood and booties through winter. Sharks are present. That's Northern California, and you already knew that.

Nearby Alternatives

Kelly's Cove at the north end can offer a slightly more sheltered option on certain swells and is worth checking before committing to the main beach. Fort Point, tucked under the Golden Gate, is a different animal entirely and worth scouting when OB is maxing out.
