Probably the best wave in Humboldt County, North Jetty is a semi-permanent sandbar carved by longshore current slamming into the jetty wall, producing a dry-hair channel paddle-out and genuinely heavy surf just beyond it. Optimal conditions call for W to NW swell in the 5-12ft range with SE wind, working best from medium to low tide. Two distinct waves share the peak: a short, hollow right that barrels close to the jetty structure and a longer, more bowling left that walls down the sand. Both are intermediate-to-advanced territory, and this is the most competitive lineup on the Lost Coast. Bottom: sand over jetty. Season: September through February. Consistency: reliable in fall and winter swells. The hazards list is short but significant: heavy locals who own this peak, and sharks in the surrounding bay. Come respectful, come early, and know your limits before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Forecasts rate localism at 8/5. Intimidating is the honest word. This is well-known North Coast territory with a tight-knit local crew who have surfed this break for decades. Weekdays are crowded, weekends are a full session. Dawn patrol timing helps but does not eliminate the pressure. Respect the hierarchy, take your turn, and don't snake.

Access & Facilities

Head south from the Eureka Bridge through Samoa, past the Coast Guard Station to the Samoa Dunes road end. From there, 4WD gets you to the break, otherwise plan to walk roughly 0.25 miles over soft sand. The road can flood in heavy winter rain. No facilities at the break itself. Bring water, fuel up before you leave Eureka, and account for wetsuit time in 4/3 or 5/4 territory depending on the month.

Nearby Alternatives

When North Jetty is maxed out or too localized to function, the broader Humboldt Bay area has beach peaks and sandbar setups that handle smaller swells with less pressure. Checking conditions north toward the Clam Beach stretch or south along the Lost Coast can find uncrowded options on the same swell window.
