A combo-swell beach break at the northern end of Huntington Beach, North HB Streets rewards patience and positioning more than raw talent. It fires best on a mixed swell, SSE through WNW, paired with a drained low tide and offshore Santa Ana winds. Size range is shoulder-high to three feet overhead, and on a long-period WNW in winter it can carry a few extra feet over the Pier. The stretch suits beginners through advanced surfers, though heavy rip current when the swell is pumping will humble the unprepared. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, with fall standing out for consistency and shape. Consistency: moderate. Avoid surfing near the drainpipes after rain, and be aware of baby white sharks reported at the Huntington Flats section.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate and spread across the break, making it more manageable than the Pier on average days. The vibe is generally welcoming, but a strong south or northwest swell with current pushes shoulder burn into the brutal range as surfers cluster the few workable peaks. Dawn patrol before the sea breeze fills in is the simplest way to avoid pressure.

Access & Facilities

Free parking on side streets and metered lots along PCH. The beach is wide and accessible with no significant walk to the water. Water quality is fair in dry conditions and notably poor near drainpipes after rain. Current is the primary hazard, and baby white sharks have been reported at the Huntington Flats, so keep that in mind during dawn sessions in warmer months.

Nearby Alternatives

If North HB Streets is walled and messy, the Pier picks up slightly less size but usually holds better shape on the same swell. The Cliffs to the north can offer a different angle when a strong WNW or NW swell is running and beach breaks are closing out.
