Zippy, occasionally lefts peel off the 56th Street jetty on Newport Beach's upper stretch, with the right combo of S or SSE swell lighting up a sand-bottom beach break that rewards surfers who can commit on steep, fast drops. Optimal conditions call for S, SSE, or SW groundswell at chest-to-overhead, E or NE wind to clean up the face, and a medium tide to keep the sand banks honest. Short-period W or WNW swell also fires here, and combo North and South Hemisphere swells can stack up surprisingly well. The lineup is intermediate-to-advanced territory: the sand-sucking drop-ins are punishing for anyone hesitant, and a moderate-to-heavy crowd of performance-oriented surfers sets a high bar. Bottom: sand with jetty influence. Season: March through October peak, occasional W and NW swells work November through February. Consistency: above average for SoCal beach break. Do not paddle out here after heavy rain as water quality degrades significantly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate but the forecast services rating tips toward unpleasant more often than not. The local crew at 56th is described as "precious" and performance standards are the unspoken filter. If you can surf at the level the wave demands, you will earn space. If you cannot, expect to be sidelined. Dawn patrol or a midweek session is the realistic path to a quieter lineup.

Access & Facilities

Street parking on 56th Street with a handful of meters nearby. Street sweeping runs on a set schedule and if spots look wide open it is almost certainly sweeping day. Leave the car elsewhere and walk rather than risk the ticket. The paddle-out is short on normal days. Water quality is fair at best and drops after any significant rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When 56th is maxed out or the crowd is unbearable, other Newport Beach jetty peaks up and down the peninsula pick up similar swell angles and can offer more breathing room. The Wedge at the south end of the peninsula handles bigger NW swell energy in a completely different and far more consequential way.
