A mellow, forgiving sand-and-cobblestone break north of Ventura, Mondos is the go-to learner wave on this stretch of the Southern California coast. It picks up W and NW swell from waist to head-high, works best on a medium-low tide when the rights peel in a slow, point-like fashion along the break. N and NE winds keep it clean. Beginners and longboarders dominate the lineup, and the vibe is genuinely welcoming most of the time. Weekends with good weather push the crowd into heavy territory, so dawn patrol on a weekday is your best move. Bottom: cobblestone and sand. Season: October through February is peak, but it's rideable year-round. Consistency: reliable on most swell events. Cross PCH carefully and watch your footing on the rocky entry, which gets slippery. After heavy rain, water quality can degrade, so check before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday mornings are mellow and the localism rating is low. Weekends and good-weather days bring heavy beginner crowds and can fill the lineup fast. The tone stays friendly but the sheer number of people, many of them learners on long boards, creates its own chaos. Go early, go mid-week, and give right-of-way generously.

Access & Facilities

Park in the dirt lot off PCH north of Ventura, low-clearance vehicles should watch the curb drop. Cross PCH with care, traffic moves fast. Walk down to the water over rocks, which can be slippery when wet. Two portable toilets are on site. No permanent facilities, so bring water and snacks.

Nearby Alternatives

Faria Beach is a short drive north and can offer slightly punchier peaks when Mondos is too soft or crowded. Pita Point, also nearby, picks up swell more directly and suits more experienced surfers when it's firing.
