Middles sits in the shadow of world-famous Lowers at Trestles, San Onofre State Park, and that context shapes everything about the experience. On a typical summer day it looks deceptively inviting from the trail, a peaky right mirroring Lowers with a fraction of the crowd, but the wave often delivers slow, gutless sections that frustrate anyone expecting Lowers-caliber performance. The redemption window opens in winter when W/NW swells wrap around Point Conception and transform the peak into genuine grinding righthanders. Best from shoulder-high to double overhead on S, SW, W, and WNW swells with E or NE offshores and a medium-low to medium-high tide. Experienced surfers will find the most reward, though forecast services lists all levels as welcome on its better days. Bottom: sand and rivermouth rock. Season: year-round, summer best. Consistency: moderate, with a strong seasonal split between summer mediocrity and surprising winter quality. Bring a shortboard for the good days, but manage expectations until the swell actually delivers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lowers overflow keeps Middles busier than its quality warrants on average days. Crowd is moderate, not Lowers-level chaos, and the local vibe is described as mostly cordial. On winter swells when it's actually good, expect the crowd to arrive fast. Dawn patrol or early-week sessions give you the best chance at breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Enter via San Onofre State Park or park off the Cristianitos exit and walk the trail down. The trail is well-traveled but the walk is real. Hazards here are unusually varied: car and beach gear theft are common, rattlesnakes appear in the lineup after rain, and the train trestle crossing is genuinely dangerous if you're not paying attention. Water quality is fair and degrades after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Middles is in its slow summer mode, Lowers is the obvious upgrade if you can stomach the crowd. Uppers, further up the Trestles complex, picks up small pulses that Lowers misses and can be a quieter option on smaller swells.
