A-frame · ReefAdvanced15–60 ftJan – Dec

A perfect A-frame detonating over a submerged reef shelf of black boulders roughly half a mile off Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, Maverick's stands alone among North American big waves. NW swell lines up the right cleanest and safest, running long and walling for 150-300m before funneling into a deep channel. W swell produces a bowlier, more explosive peak but drives riders toward the rocks. E winds are ideal, though many regulars will take a slight onshore over anything with side-chop. Best from 8ft to well overhead-plus, this wave does not begin to show its character below 8ft and has been ridden beyond 60ft on the largest recorded swells. Experienced big-wave riders and certified chargers only. Crowds are moderate by headcount but extreme by consequence. Bottom: reef and boulders. Season: November-February. Consistency: reliable when NW ground swell arrives, which it does repeatedly through winter. Water hovers around 10-13C year-round, so a 5/4 and booties are not optional.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup population stays moderate, self-regulated by consequence rather than gatekeeping. Localism exists and is described as intimidating. Do something stupid on a 30ft wave and you will hear about it, from the living. Tow teams and jet skis share the water on bigger days. Respect the Maverick's Rescue Team and stay out of their lanes.

Access & Facilities

Parking at the Pillar Point lot or along the harbor. PWCs and boats operate out of Pillar Point Harbor for water access on XXL days. The paddle-out is long and demanding. No rentals, no instructors, no learner sessions here.

Nearby Alternatives

When Maverick's is too big or closed out, Ocean Beach San Francisco handles overhead-plus NW swell on its day and offers more approachable big-wave paddling on outer bars. Pacifica's Linda Mar is 15 minutes south and catches similar swell at manageable size for intermediate surfers waiting for conditions to come down.
