Third Point is the outermost and fastest section of the Malibu cobblestone point break, sitting north of the pier along the Santa Monica Bay coastline. It handles S, SW, and WSW swells best, with N to NW winds keeping the face clean and offshore. Mid tide is the sweet spot. Optimal size runs waist-high to double overhead, and on larger swells the three points can link into a ride exceeding a quarter-mile. An aggro shortboard crew dominates the peak, and the lineup operates on a hard-edged survival-of-the-fittest dynamic. Expect shouting, drop-ins, and the occasional crack of colliding boards. Intermediate surfers can navigate it, but experience reading a chaotic high-volume lineup is essential before paddling out. Bottom: cobblestone and sand. Season: March through October. Consistency: reliable summer option with occasional winter windows on big NW swell. Water quality is fair but can deteriorate sharply after rain, particularly when the lagoon breaches.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most crowded surf spots in California. Third Point draws a tight shortboard pack that enforces its own informal hierarchy. Localism is real but not extreme by SoCal standards. Dawn patrol significantly reduces the circus. Midday summer sessions are not recommended unless you enjoy people-watching more than surfing. Respect the pecking order, sit wide, take your turn, and keep your board under control.

Access & Facilities

Park near Malibu Pier on Pacific Coast Highway. The walk to Third Point is the longest of the three sections, heading north along the point. Restrooms, food, and surf shops are nearby at the pier complex. Be aware of loose boards in the impact zone and rogue sets that push the crowd into each other.

Nearby Alternatives

When Third Point is closing out or overrun, Second Point (Kiddie Bowl) offers a shorter, faster performance peak with slightly less pressure. First Point, just inside, is a mechanical longboard-friendly wall that works at smaller sizes. On big NW swells that overwhelm the point, Carbon Beach or other protected spots west toward Ventura may offer cleaner conditions.
