First Point Malibu is one of the most iconic right-hand point breaks on the West Coast, a mechanical, cobblestone-bottom wave that peels with hypnotic consistency off the point just north of Malibu Pier on Pacific Coast Highway. S, SW, and WSW swells are the bread and butter here, typically working waist-high to double overhead, with medium tide the sweet spot. On larger pulses, all three points can link into a ride stretching over a quarter-mile. The crowd is relentless year-round but peaks in summer when every skill level shows up on every craft imaginable. Bottom: cobblestone and sand. Season: March through November. Consistency: high during summer south swell season. Water quality is the honest dealbreaker: after any significant rainfall, bacteria levels at the Malibu Creek lagoon can spike dangerously, and E. Coli warnings are not rare. Bring a change of clothes and avoid surfing here for 72 hours post-rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most crowded lineups in California. Loose boards, drop-ins, and collisions are a real hazard, not an exaggeration. The local vibe is survivable if you're respectful and patient, but this is not a wave to learn right-of-way rules. Dawn patrol trims the crowd meaningfully. Weekdays in shoulder season are the closest you'll get to breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available along PCH near Malibu Pier. The point is visible and easy to read from the lot. Restrooms and food options are nearby. Water quality is rated fair at best and deteriorates sharply after rainfall due to septic runoff from the Malibu Creek watershed. Check Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card before paddling out after any rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Malibu is maxed out or blown out, Zuma Beach to the north offers beach break peaks that handle a wider range of conditions. Topanga and County Line to the north also pick up similar swell and can be significantly less crowded on the right day.
