A scattered collection of beachbreaks and one point anchored inside MacKerricher State Park, north of Fort Bragg on the Mendocino coast. Virgin Creek is the standout: a wedgy right peels into a channel with steep drops and occasional tube sections, while the left works too but rarely matches the right. Pudding Creek is peaky but unreliable, plagued by shifting currents and submerged rocks. The state park's main stretch is six miles of generic beachbreak that only fires on small, clean, windless days. SE or E wind is ideal. SW and W swells in the chest-to-head-high range are the target window. This area suits intermediate surfers who can read changing conditions. Bottom: sand and rock, Laguna Point excepted. Season: late spring through early autumn. Consistency: low to moderate. Great white sharks are present in these waters, confirmed by a 12-ft specimen found on the Virgin Creek beach, so stay sharp.

There was a 12' white shark that recently washed up on the beach at Virgin Creek (it was deadOf course). So that tells you that the tooth is out there.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Virgin Creek draws a small local contingent and you may get a few cold glances, but humility and basic respect read well here. The rest of the MacKerricher breaks are typically empty. Dawn patrol on windless summer mornings is your best shot at Virgin Creek without friction.

Access & Facilities

Pudding Creek is signed off Highway 1 about two blocks north of Elm Street. Virgin Creek has a wide dirt lot on the east side of Highway 1 just south of the Fort Bragg city limit sign, cross the road and follow the trail to the water. MacKerricher State Park has maintained facilities. Water is clean throughout. Watch for submerged rocks on both Pudding Creek and the northern park breaks.

Nearby Alternatives

Fort Bragg's Glass Beach area is a short drive south and can offer slightly more protection on certain swells. On bigger, cleaner swells, the Mendocino headlands and points to the south are worth the extra drive if this stretch is maxed out or blown out.
