L.A.'s most notorious big-wave right sits at the extreme western tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and its reputation is built on two things: consequence and localism. W, WNW, and WSW swells of medium-to-long period (14sec+) trigger a powerful, walled right that pitches off a boulder-strewn reef and doesn't wake up until it's overhead or better. Best wind is E to NE, keeping faces clean. Medium-to-high tide smooths out the worst of the boil. On big N swells, a second peak called Truck Drivers activates a few hundred yards behind the main peak, raising the stakes considerably. The spot holds well past 20ft. This is advanced-only water: the rip on large swells actively pulls you toward the rocks, and the trail access involves steep, slick cliffs. The local crew is historically one of the most territorial in California, with a vibe rating that exceeds any numeric scale. Bottom: reef/rock. Season: November–February. Consistency: low, requires significant swell to function. Park well away from the access point. Coming in alone as an unknown is not recommended.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup appears nearly empty for a reason. Lunada Bay's local crew has a documented history of intimidation toward visiting surfers, including physical confrontation and harassment on the trail down. This is not hyperbole or surf mythology. If you're not known here, expect to be vibed at minimum. Respect protocols apply doubly: low profile, early arrival, and accept that you may not get waves.

Access & Facilities

Access is off Paseo Lunado via a steep cliff trail that becomes dangerous when wet. There are zero facilities: no parking lots, no restrooms, no food, no rentals. Multi-million-dollar homes line the bluff. Rocky shore, no sand. Water quality is fair given proximity to L.A. Leave the area clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lunada is either not breaking or unwelcoming, the broader Palos Verdes coastline has other reef and point options that activate on similar swell windows with less overhead. Malibu and the South Bay beach breaks are also within range for smaller, friendlier days.
