A cobblestone reef peak south of San Clemente, Lower Trestles delivers long, fast, rippable walls in both directions and rarely closes out even on serious swell. SW and S swells are the engine here, working best from shoulder-high to double-overhead, with NE or E winds keeping faces clean. Medium-low to medium-high tide is the sweet spot, though it handles all tides reasonably well. Intermediates can find space on the inside, but the main peak is a competitive, lineup that draws pros and serious surfers from across Southern California year-round. Bottom: cobblestone and sand over rivermouth rock. Season: best March through October, functional all year. Consistency: high. Water quality is generally fair but degrades sharply after heavy rain, so check conditions before paddling out after a storm system moves through the region.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lowers is a zoo, full stop. Cars are in the lot before sunrise and the lineup fills immediately. Forecasts rate crowd pressure at 9/5, localism at 8/5: hungry, aggressive, competitive. Earn your place by surfing the inside first, reading the pecking order, and not snaking. Dawn patrol on a weekday is your best shot at a functional session.

Access & Facilities

Park near the Cristianitos Road exit off I-5, San Clemente, and take the paved bike and pedestrian path under the railway trestle to the beach. No parking or facilities at the break itself. Leave nothing valuable in your car. Watch for the freight train on the trestle crossing.

Nearby Alternatives

When Lowers is maxed out or unrideable, Uppers and Middles are within walking distance and often less crowded. Church's, a lefthand wall off San Mateo Point, picks up S and SW swell well and offers a different vibe entirely.
