A right-hand cobblestone reef half a mile south of the LA-Ventura county line, Leo Carrillo breaks in a scenic cove off PCH and works best on S to WSW swell at mid tide, waist-high to double-overhead. NW or northerly winds go offshore, keeping faces clean. The confined takeoff near the big outside rock comfortably holds about six surfers, so expect a crowded lineup on any decent swell. Locals are relatively welcoming, but the sheer volume of takers means positioning and patience matter more than aggression. Bottom: cobblestone reef. Season: March to October. Consistency: moderate to good through spring and summer. When bigger W or NW swells arrive, the outer rock reefs activate and shift the peak north, running more like a point break and opening a second takeoff zone outside. On the largest swells, a second point called Primo's fires farther north and offers an escape valve from the crowds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the more crowded stretches of Malibu-area coast. The tight takeoff zone creates a de facto capacity problem on good days. Locals are described as welcoming rather than territorial, but the sheer volume of surfers means the wave fills fast. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions significantly improve your odds of getting waves.

Access & Facilities

Leo Carrillo State Beach sits on PCH between Malibu and Oxnard. Follow the signs on PCH. Paid parking, restrooms, and lifeguards are on site in season. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after rain, so avoid sessions in the 72 hours following a significant storm.

Nearby Alternatives

When Leo is overcrowded or out of swell range, Zuma Beach to the south offers open beach peaks that spread the crowd. On big W or NW swells, shift to Primo's farther north for longer walls with fewer bodies.
