A workhorse beach break at the foot of the Hermosa Beach pier, firing on SW windswell and WNW groundswell when conditions align in fall and winter. Peaks shift constantly along the sandbars, so the best banks change week to week. Ideal wind is a light morning offshore from the NE or E before the sea breeze fills in. Works from 2ft and holds shape up to a solid overhead-plus on a good swell. Summer is quiet, often flat or junky with onshore wind. Fall and winter deliver the standout sessions, with combo swells stacking up thick, overhead peaks from 10th Street all the way to the pier. The lineup draws a tight South Bay local crew with real history in this area. Expect competition for waves in the water. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter. Consistency: moderate. Show up at dawn on a WNW groundswell with a N wind and you will find a very different lineup than mid-morning on a weekend.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch has produced generations of skilled South Bay surfers and that community takes the lineup seriously. Weekends are heavily crowded, even in marginal surf. Localism is present. Standard lineup respect applies: wait your turn, read the pecking order, do not drop in. Dawn patrol mid-week in winter is the best strategy for space and quality simultaneously.

Access & Facilities

The pier and surrounding area are easy to access from Hermosa Avenue. Street parking fills fast on weekends. Restrooms, showers, and food are all within a short walk of the beach. The pier itself can be a hazard in bigger surf. Watch for other surfers and pier pylons on larger sets.

Nearby Alternatives

Manhattan Beach Pier to the north offers a similar beach break setup and can have better banks on a given swell. Redondo Beach picks up more south swell energy and is worth checking when Hermosa is flat or blown out.
