A scattering of submerged reefs just south of Huntington Beach Pier, HB Cliffs strings together long, workable walls across several distinct peaks and channels that spread the crowd and keep things moving. Best on S to SW groundswell with a N or NE offshore wind, mid to low tide, in the 3-8ft range. The multiple reef setups mean there is usually a functional option even when one peak goes soft. Intermediate surfers will find the most value here, getting genuine wall time without the punishing consequence of shallower SoCal reefs. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: high year-round on S swell. Paddle out via the channels between peaks, but note those channels tighten up and rips intensify when size pushes past head-high, so read the water before committing. Water quality drops after significant rain events, worth checking before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

HB Cliffs draws a regular crowd given its consistency and easy access, but the spread of peaks absorbs numbers better than a single-peak setup. Localism is generally manageable. Respect the lineup rotation and give way on the better-defined peaks if you are new to the spot. Dawn patrol during the week gives the most breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking lots off Pacific Coast Hwy provide the most direct access. Showers on site. The broader HB infrastructure means food, water, and surf shops are close. Water quality is generally fine but degrades after heavy rain, particularly near urban runoff points.

Nearby Alternatives

When HB Cliffs goes flat or too onshore, the Huntington Beach Pier offers more consistent shape on smaller swells with a broader swell window. Further south, Lowers at Trestles picks up SW swell more efficiently and rewards a longer drive when conditions are right.
