A style-conscious right-hand reef point tucked along the Santa Barbara coastline, Hammond's is a fickle but legitimate wave that rewards patience and local knowledge. It needs a straight W or WSW swell, ideally under 15 seconds period, and Rincon going double-overhead is your green light that Hammond's is on. Best on incoming tide, with N or NE wind keeping faces clean. The wave rarely gets bigger than a couple feet overhead, but the inside end-bowl section bends back hard and produces solid tubes on the right tide. Crowds are heavy on weekends and the locals are style-conscious and hungry, having earned their pick by waiting out the inconsistency. Bottom: rock reef. Season: October through February. Consistency: fickle, swell-dependent. If it just rained, water quality drops, so check before you paddle out or you may be waiting a long time in cold water for nothing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Heavy crowds on weekends, lighter during the week. Locals are experienced, territorial, and have earned priority through years of waiting out the inconsistency. Vibe is described as doable but hungry. Be mellow, give respect in the water, and don't snake sets. The atmosphere dictates the behaviour here.

Access & Facilities

Access is genuinely difficult. Parking outside the Four Seasons hotel and walking in is the less conspicuous option. Valet at the hotel signals visitor immediately. Cold water demands at minimum a 3/2 or 4/3 depending on the month, and the waits between sets can be long enough to earn you hypothermia in winter. Bring warm layers for after.

Nearby Alternatives

When Hammond's isn't firing, Rincon is your benchmark and primary alternative just up the coast. If Rincon is going double-overhead and you want something less competitive, check the nearby Santa Barbara beachbreaks for options at smaller sizes.
