Four miles of crescent beach south of Princeton Harbor means some section of Half Moon Bay is almost always picking up swell from N or S, but honesty demands this: 90 percent of the time it's junk. The bottom shifts constantly, the weather is relentless, and the exposure makes consistent quality hard to find. When the stars align, W to NW swell at waist-high to double overhead, glassy or light E wind, you can stumble onto a screaming sandbar peak with nobody out. Best size is roughly 3-8ft, and the wave is faster and more hollow than its beginner-friendly reputation suggests. Bottom: sand with some rock. Season: July through February for best swell consistency. Consistency: medium at best, low on typical days. Dawn patrol in winter after a clean swell arrival gives you the best shot at finding it uncrowded and shapely before the onshore wind kills it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is generally welcoming and mellow, rated 3 out of 5 on local pressure. On the rare day when a peak fires properly, expect a handful of local surfers to materialize quickly. The beach is vast enough that spreading out is easy on most days. Weekends bring more traffic but it rarely reaches genuinely competitive levels.

Access & Facilities

Most roads off Highway 1 reach the beach. Some terminate at State Park access points, others at informal dirt lots. Facilities are minimal to nonexistent at most access points. Currents and shorebreak poundings are the main hazards. Rip currents deserve respect after big swells pulse through.

Nearby Alternatives

When Half Moon Bay is blown out or the sandbars are dead, Montara to the north is worth checking for more sheltered conditions on N swells. Pescadero and the breaks further south along Highway 1 offer alternatives when a different swell angle or sand configuration is needed.
