Haggerty's delivers the best-shaped wave on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a 100-yard left point-reef that works from chest-high to triple overhead. Optimal conditions are WSW to WNW swell, 3-15ft, with offshore winds from S, SE, or E keeping faces clean. Mid-period west swell is the sweet spot. Three distinct takeoff zones serve different skill levels, but honest assessment is that this wave rewards intermediates and up, and the lineup enforces that standard. Bottom: Rock and kelp reef. Season: October through April. Consistency: Needs size to fully activate, expect long paddle sets on smaller days. Access is via cliff trails at Malaga Cove School, and those trails are genuinely slippery, particularly after rain. Water quality is fair and drops noticeably following heavy rainfall, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the heaviest lineups on the PV coast. On smaller days the pack skews young and aggressive, and priority leapfrog near the rocks is standard. Larger swells bring a more senior crew who know the wave better than you do. Expect snaking on smaller days and bring patience. Do not paddle into the cramped takeoff zone without reading the pecking order first.

Access & Facilities

Cliff trails from Malaga Cove School lead down to the break. Those trails are legitimately slippery and require focus, especially with a board. No facilities at the break. Water quality is rated fair and degrades after rainfall. Give it a day or two after rain before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Haggerty's is too small or too crowded, the broader PV reef system offers options. Rat Beach picks up similar swell just inside. Exiles and Indicator, farther around the point, add extra size and barrel potential on the biggest swells but demand serious experience.
