Ghost Tree is a big-wave reef off the Monterey Peninsula that only wakes up when the North Pacific delivers a legitimate swell, typically NW at 15ft-plus. It needs a large, well-organized groundswell from the NW to NNW window, offshore winds from the SE or E, and enough size to trigger the deep-water ledge that makes the wave so dangerous. Paddle sessions exist, but tow-in is the standard approach, and even experienced big-wave surfers treat this place with serious respect. The wave breaks over a shallow, jagged rock reef that punishes wipeouts without mercy. Bottom: reef. Season: Nov-Mar, when North Pacific swells are largest. Consistency: rare, perhaps a handful of true sessions per winter. Access requires a boat or personal watercraft, which keeps the lineup empty on even the biggest days. Come prepared with a full safety team, inflation vest, and rescue plan. This is not a spot to figure out on the fly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is effectively empty by default because access requires a watercraft. On the rare days it fires, a small group of dedicated big-wave surfers from the Monterey and Santa Cruz area will be in the water. Respect for those already on the water is essential. This is a tight-knit community with deep experience at this wave.

Access & Facilities

Access is by boat or jet ski only. The area is near Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula. There are no beach facilities at the break itself. Crews typically launch from the Monterey area. Bring all your own water, food, safety gear, and a qualified rescue driver. The reef is unforgiving and holds-downs are long.

Nearby Alternatives

On smaller NW swells that do not trigger Ghost Tree, Asilomar and Seaside Reef near Pacific Grove offer more accessible options. Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, roughly 45 minutes north, is the region's benchmark big-wave and intermediate venue and fires on the same NW swell window.
